Crypton Performance Fabric Review

There are several performance fabric materials that are used to keep all the stains, smells and bacteria out, and stand up to everyday wear and tear. These fabrics are either natural or synthetic. Most furniture is a blend of these performance fabrics with a more comfortable fabric like cotton, chenille or velvet.

Some commonly used performance fabric materials include polyester, which is stain resistant, and quite easy to clean. If moisture is soaked onto the fabric, it actually withdraws the moisture to the surface to making it easy to spot clean. Nylon is another performance fabric that resists mold and mildew. However, it’s not as resistant to stains as polyester. Lastly, Olefin is soft and durable, which is a harmonious combination when it comes to furniture. Olefin is water, mold, mildew, fade and flame resistant. It’s also built to last high-traffic use, so it holds it’s shape and look as well!

What is Crypton Fabric?

Crypton is a brand of performance fabric that was designed for indoor use. It’s made of a variety of fibers, created with a prime coat to resist soil, stains and bacteria. To fend off bacteria, Crypton includes a silver-ion technology, which protects your furniture from bacteria to penetrate, which also fends off the odor. And quite honestly, there’s nothing worse than smelling odor when you’re hanging out on your couch.

Purchasing Crypton Fabric

The other wonderful thing about Crypton is their furniture comes in a variety of fabric blends like chenille and linen that make it feel soft and cozy. I don’t want the couch to feel like we’re sitting on a mountain of polyester, and Crypton fabrics delivers on both comfort and durability.

All that being said, one of the best things about Crypton performance fabric is that it’s eco-friendly. It’s GreenGuard Gold certified. Plus it’s free of potentially harmful levels of PFOS, PFOA, formaldehyde, heavy metals, phenols, phthalates and odor and skin sensitizers, according to their website.

The Sofa We selected

When we moved into our home four years ago, we purchased two Jordan sofas from Four Seasons Furniture. Then opted to have the Crypton slipcovers. We can actually take the slip covers off and throw them in the washing machine if we find a stain that is too difficult to hand clean.

If you interested in seeing where Crypton fabrics or furniture is sold, they have a store locator on their website. Some of the national chains include Pottery Barn, One Kings Lane and Calico. We purchased our sofas locally at Celadon Home.

How to Care for Crypton Performance Fabric

Many stains on my sofa have come off easily simply by blotting with a dry, clean towl or with warm water and a towel. It’s amazing to see, when you spill a liquid on the fabric, it typically bubbles up and rolls off of the fabric. Then you simply blot it. If and when you get something like ketchup, red wine or other spills on Crypton fabric, the company recommends the following steps.

Blot the stain with a clean towl. Then, mix 1/4 teaspoon of an enzyme-based detergent such as powdered Tide or Dawn dishwashing soap with 1 cup of warm water in a spray bottle. Spray the stain with the mixture – but don’t over saturate. Then take a soft bristle brush, using circular motions to the stain. Allow the cleaning solution to work into the stain. Finally, rinse the solution well to remove excess cleaning solution. Dry and soak up access moisture when you are finished. – Excerpt from Crypton Fabric Intelligence

Crypton also sells their own cleaning products via their website or Amazon. They have a list of a number of other cleaning practices for different stain scenarios. Luckily, I’ve only needed to blot or use water and a towel.

Furniture is such a huge part of our life and it is a big investment. There’s a lot to think about when it comes to selecting fabric for your furniture. If there’s a fabric that’s durable to withstand kids and pets, I’m all in!
