Hanging Rattan Chair
One of the easiest ways to make your coastal home feel fun is by adding a hanging rattan chair. This classic island style adds the perfect element of fun to any room. You can hang the white rattan chair or the traditional rattan chair like we have in a playroom. Today I’m discussing why we love this chair and how you can enjoy it as well!

The hanging rattan chair from Serena & Lily is inspired by a Scandinavian design from the 60s, the sculptural frame is hand made of bent rattan with a scooped seat that cradles you as you float, mentally sweeping you away to a relaxing place and time.
Hanging Rattan Chair
Before we ordered the hanging rattan chair, we did not have a cozy place to sit in the playroom. Theo’s nursery was the only room with a comfortable seat to read with the children. Now that we have one of these in the playroom, we joke that we need another one soon!
First impressions with serena & lily
When considering this order, I discussed the chairs with one of the design consultants online to determine if I was making a good choice. Did you know that Serena & Lily offers this free service? You can discuss your design plans and get advice from professionals. You can even send photos of your space and they will help you with all of the details. They helped me with the design of our kids bedroom also.
Installation
Our chair arrived three weeks after ordering it online. Several larger items arrive via white glove delivery, which is a really nice benefit to Serena & Lily shipping. When an item is white glove delivery, they deliver it in your home and set it up. Our hanging rattan chair was a standard delivery and arrived on time. I was nervous ordering the natural rattan color because I’ve received items from other companies that appear orange in person. I was pleased to find that this hanging rattan chair is the perfect warm color of rattan and not orange.
The chair hangs by a heavy-duty loop and rope, so it’s super sturdy. While professional installation is recommended, my husband felt confident in hanging it. He hung it from a support beam with a very sturdy hook. The chair can hold up to 300 pounds. The chair itself is 30″W x 29″D x 44″H. Serena & Lily has a few other rattan chair options that I’m sharing below. I really love the double hanging rattan chair with white details as well.
Safety and Durability
When it comes to safety, our family has a rule for this chair. It can only be used for relaxing and reading. Any rough play and the culprit will lose privileges to sit in the chair. The single chair comfortably sits two (and sometimes three) children. It fits myself and one child as well. I feel very comfortable knowing that it is secure and hangs with a heavy duty rope.
My children are rough on items and I was concerned about how long this chair would last in a playroom setting. I have no regrets! Also, the rattan has a clear lacquer finish for durability which allows for easy cleaning. Serena & Lily provided care instructions for rattan, here is a quick summary.
Cleaning the Chair
- Carefully trim the loose fibers with scissors.
- If it’s in direct sunlight, it can dry out with cracking and to avoid this, moisten every month with a damp cloth and allow the rattan to air dry.
- Blot spills and do not scrub.
- Mild soap and water can be used for stains, but it is recommended to avoid abrasives and cleaners.
Family Favorite
Over the last several months, the hanging rattan chair has become a family favorite. Our oldest is now in kindergarten and reading to his little brother at night. We placed it near their bookshelves and we’re in the process of creating a reading nook in the space. I’ve also made it a habit to read to my youngest throughout the day while lounging in the chair. We recently placed a TV in the room and we can now enjoy movie nights and the kids have a new place to enjoy their favorite cartoons.
Hanging rattan Chair inspiration
Although we live at the beach, this chair can create a coastal vibe in any room. Also, you don’t need to have a coastal home to have this chair. It looks great with all styles and all decor! For comfort, I do recommend adding a cozy throw and a pillow. I love the Topanga Linen Throw from Serena & Lily.
Looking for inspiration on how to include this product in a room? The hanging rattan chairs can be used in several spaces. I’ve seen them used in playrooms, bedrooms, sunrooms, nurseries living rooms, and more. Our specific chair is not made for outdoors but Serena & Lily does have an exterior hanging rattan chair option.
If you’re on the fence or considering purchasing a hanging rattan chair, I hope this helps with your decision. It has a unique shape and creates a fun vibe for any room. It brings the perfect amount of warmth to our neutral and coastal playroom.
